Mary Ellen Lindhorn
Mary Ellen Lindhorn (nee Keister), beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on February 1, 2018. Mary Ellen was born on March 20, 1926 in Decatur, IL to Clifford and Kate (nee Hayes) Keister. She grew up in Warrensburg, IL and graduated top of her class from Warrensburg High School in May, 1943. Mary played the piano from an early age, performing at local social functions, recitals and piano competitions. After high school, she moved to Evanston, IL, attending Northwestern University to study piano pedagogy. While at Northwestern she met Robert Lindhorn. They were married on July 12, 1947 in Warrensburg, IL and were together for 67 years, until Robert’s death in November, 2014.
The couple remained in Evanston until Robert graduated in 1949, the same year that their first son, Clifford, was born. That same year they relocated to Findlay, IL where Robert had a teaching appointment. Two years later, in 1950, their second son, Phillip, was born. In 1952 the family took an opportunity to relocate to the Chicago area. They lived in Brookfield and Cicero before purchasing their home on Cornell Avenue in Villa Park in 1956, where they lived until the late 1990’s. Mary and Robert spent many winters in Arizona after his retirement, and eventually moved there full-time in the late 1990’s until 2011 when they moved back to Illinois to be near family.
When Mary was not taking care of her family, she was actively involved with the Community Congregational Church of Villa Park as a regular member of the church choir. She also worked as a librarian at York High School in Elmhurst from the late 1960’s until the 1990’s, a job she dearly loved as she was an avid reader and enjoyed encouraging others to develop a love for books. Another passion was travelling. Over the years Mary and Robert traveled to many destinations around the globe – Europe, Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, Hawaii – and that was just one trip! There were numerous other trips around the US with friends over the years, as well as many family vacations! Ultimately, it was her family that brought Mary the greatest joy. She was the matriarch of a continuously growing family (6 grandkids and 17 great-grandkids!) and seized every opportunity to attend as many games, recitals, plays, competitions, graduations, birthday parties, and anything else the kids were involved in.
Mary Ellen is survived by her two sons: Clifford (Deb) and Phillip (Carol) Lindhorn; six grandchildren: Lara (Dennis) Ward, Laura (Dan) Vitkavage, Sara (Chris) Booker, Brenden (Heather) Kurtz, Kenneth (Brittny) Lindhorn, and Justin (Jerri-Leigh) Lindhorn; and seventeen great-grandchildren: Tim Vitkavage, Luke Beisner, Dekoda Jensen, Ethan Kurtz, Kyra Ward, Taylor Snyder , Madisyn Jensen, Ashleigh Lindhorn, Katie Kurtz, Andrew Lindhorn, Miriam Vitkavage, Sam Kurtz, Megan Lindhorn, Caleigh Lindhorn, Avery Kurtz, Adeline Lindhorn, Joshua Lindhorn, Bennet Lindhorn. She is recently preceded in death by her husband Robert Lindhorn and daughter-in-law Marylou Lindhorn.
