Mary E. Ruth

–  08/06/2017

Mary Eileen Ruth, nee Cummings was born on September 17, 1930 in Elmhurst, Illinois and passed away peacefully at her home in Villa Park on the morning of August 6, 2017, surrounded by her husband Roy and their four children. Mary was a generous and loving neighbor, friend, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her ability to acknowledge birthdays, anniversaries and holidays was a constant encouragement to her children and grandchildren who looked forward to receiving her thoughtful cards like clockwork throughout the year. Receiving her notes was almost as fun as answering her annual birthday call and listening as she and Roy sang an out of tune but spirited rendition of “Happy Birthday.” Faithful to her friends and church, Mary attended elementary school reunions well into her eighties and enjoyed services and prayer meetings at St. Alexander’s Catholic Church for over 60 years. She eagerly attended nearly every wedding, birthday party and graduation to which she was invited. She loved to talk, laugh and feed people. A sweet tooth never went neglected in Mary’s presence. During the difficult past year she often reflected, “I have the best family. Since I was a little girl all I ever wanted was my very own family. And I got the best one.” She spoke with amazement and gratitude as if it was something that just happened to her. As if it wasn’t something that she and Roy created and nurtured from the ground up. This was typical of her humble nature and her soft, kind heart.  Mary lived to make others happy. Their joy was her joy. Our joy is her memory. She leaves behind her loving husband of 69 years, Roy Ruth, who says they “never slept on a quarrel,” her children Cathy Jevne, Mike Ruth, Connie Collins and Deb Svoboda, four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren many in-laws who she loved as her very own. She is also survived by her siblings Rita McGrath, Pat Kinnane, Jim Cummings and Colleen Heck. Visitation will be held at St. Alexander’s Catholic Church, 300 S. Cornell Ave., Villa Park, IL 60181 on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at 9 a.m. followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery, St. Charles Rd. and Riford Rd., Glen Ellyn, IL 60137.
