Margaret Elizabeth Wells Lindberg

Margaret was born to Helen and Clayton Wells on 5 April 1919 in Oak Park, Illinois. Her formative years were spent with family, younger brother Clayton and sister Helen, in Oak Park until she moved to Seattle, Washington in 1947. She met Carl Lindberg and returned to Chicago. They were married in September 1948. Phillip was born in September of 1949. Marcia was born in October of 1951. Margaret and Carl moved from Oak Park to Hillside in 1952. The Lindbergs’ were very active in the community. Their first major accomplishment was to work with five couples to Charter the Hillside Baptist Church in 1953. Margaret was the last living Charter Member. She was involved in many ministries including Deaconess, church secretary, Sunday school teacher, and member of the choir. She and Carl were an active part of the life of the church.

Margaret worked for many years as a volunteer in the community. Her activities included but were not limited to local government, forty-three years as a Republican elections judge, elected to two terms on the district 93 school board, the Hillside Senior Citizens Services coordinating activities for the residents, and the Illinois Youth Commission. Her efforts were recognized by numerous honors including a certificate of merit from the district 93 school board, service awards from the Kiwanis International, Illinois Minute Man ’76 Award, and the Cook County Sheriff’s Medal of Honor. Margaret was the first woman to receive the Proviso Township citizen of the year in 2001. 24 April 1976 was Margaret Lindberg Day in Hillside.

Margaret was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Margaret enjoyed traveling. She drove the family through almost every state in the continental United States to see many major attraction. In later years she traveled through Europe and Asia and walked the Great Wall of China at age 84.

Margaret enjoyed many different kinds of activities and crafts including leather crafting, knitting, sewing, quilting, and crocheting. She taught many of the activities to others including a weekly television program on the PBS station in Chicago.

She attended Columbia Christian College as a Music major

Her journey of 94 years came to a peaceful end at her Hillside home of sixty-one years on Monday 16 September 2013. She was proceeded in death by her husband Carl, parents Helen and Clayton F. and her younger brother Clayton H. and her Sister Helen. Our mother spent her life in service to family, friends, strangers, and her Lord. Her final days were difficult, but she faced them with uncommon courage, strength, and grace. She was an inspiration to all she met especially her children Phillip (Lynn) and Marcia Frank (Jim) and five grandchildren, Steven, Lisa (Pete), Mallory, Josh, and Zach, whom she loved and was loved. She leaves this life to rest in peace with the knowledge that she was loved by her family and friends.
